St Paul's Art Rationale
At our school, we believe art is a vital part of a broad and balanced curriculum. It provides children with the opportunity to express themselves creatively, explore ideas, and develop confidence in their own abilities. Through art, pupils learn to observe the world around them, think critically, and communicate their thoughts, feelings, and identities.
Our art curriculum is carefully designed to build knowledge and skills progressively from Nursery & Reception to Year 6. Pupils develop their abilities across drawing, painting, and sculpture, moving from early exploration and experimentation to more refined techniques and personal expression. Each stage builds on prior learning, ensuring that children gain confidence, control, and independence as artists. Our sketch books play a key role in recording these ideas.
We place a strong emphasis on teaching technical skills alongside creativity. Pupils learn how to use materials effectively, develop control, and apply key artistic concepts such as line, colour, tone, texture, form, and composition. As they progress, they are encouraged to make deliberate artistic choices, reflect on their work, and refine their ideas.
Inspiration from a diverse range of artists and cultures is central to our curriculum. This helps pupils to understand that art reflects different perspectives, histories, and identities, while also promoting inclusion and cultural awareness.
We aim for all children to:
- Develop confidence in expressing ideas visually
- Build strong technical skills across a range of media
- Appreciate and evaluate the work of artists
- Understand the role of art in society and culture
- Experience pride in creating meaningful, personal artwork
Ultimately, we want our pupils to see themselves as artists — confident, creative, and proud of the ideas they bring to life.
