St Paul's Design and Technology Rationale

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils discover, design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Rationale:

At St. Paul’s, we want our pupils to be designers of the future! We want to inspire them that anybody can be innovative and creative.

In Design and Technology, pupils are encouraged to develop their creative, technical and practical expertise which will enable them to perform everyday tasks confidently and more importantly, participate successfully in an increasingly technological world. We want pupils to build and apply their knowledge, from the beginning in Early Years where they will embed their fine motor skills and problem solving and throughout key stage one and two where they will have the understanding and skills in order to design, make, test and then evaluate their ideas and products and also the work of others.  We want to challenge their thinking, building on what they already know, understand and can do. At St Paul’s, Design and Technology provides opportunities for older pupils to showcase and model their work, enabling younger children to see what can be achieved as they progress through the school.

The Design and Technology curriculum underpins all future learning by supporting, fostering, promoting and developing children. Pupils will be equipped with not only the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum but also be prepared for their responsibilities of leading not only a healthy and nutritious life but to contribute to a bright and innovative future.
