At St Paul’s we are very passionate about our English curriculum. We believe that an engagement with reading and writing is the window to a successful individual. Throughout all activities, we ensure that the children have the opportunity to develop and practise their basic skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Each phase has their own wider curriculum theme which gives children opportunities to use their Literacy skills in other areas of the curriculum. This thematic approach enables the children to express themselves creatively and imaginatively and communicate effectively with others, whilst ensuring pupils are exposed to a wide range of high quality texts.
Writing
At St Paul’s we aim to create a positive writing culture which links to our core values, ethos and our mission to ‘Make a Difference to Everyone.’ We recognise that writing is essential for success; it gives pupils an opportunity to express themselves, communicate their ideas and gain opportunities to engage positively with the world around them.
At St Paul’s we follow the National Curriculum and use Talk4Writing as a framework to support the teaching of writing to our pupils. We intend for our writing curriculum to provide strong foundations and give children the essential early literacy skills which they need in order to progress onto more formal writing opportunities. We do this by planning for progression in each literacy strand, focusing on the value of spoken language and adapting our approach, where necessary, to meet the needs of all of our pupils.
We want our children to become enthusiastic, confident and motivated writers who can write clearly for a range of purposes across the curriculum and feel well equipped to share their writing to a range of audiences.
