Westgate (Year 5 and 6)

In Westgate Phase, children build on the knowledge, skills and confidence developed in Southgate Phase as they prepare for the transition to secondary school. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 are encouraged to become independent, reflective and resilient learners who take increasing responsibility for their own learning. Through a broad, engaging and ambitious curriculum, children are challenged to think critically, solve problems and apply their learning in a range of meaningful contexts. We nurture curiosity, perseverance and a strong sense of achievement, ensuring that every child is equipped for the next stage of their educational journey.

Communication and oracy remains central to learning in Westgate Phase. We provide a language-rich environment where pupils are encouraged to articulate their ideas, justify their opinions and engage thoughtfully with others. Through high-quality texts, rich discussions, debate, collaborative learning and explicit vocabulary teaching, children develop the confidence and skills to communicate effectively. Opportunities to speak, listen, read and write are embedded across the curriculum, enabling pupils to deepen their understanding, broaden their vocabulary and express themselves with increasing maturity and confidence.

Assessment plays a vital role in supporting learning throughout Westgate Phase. We use a range of formative assessment strategies to identify what children know, understand and need to learn next. Through questioning, discussion, observation and the review of pupils' work, teachers monitor progress and adapt teaching to provide appropriate support and challenge. Assessment helps us celebrate achievements, address misconceptions and ensure that all children make strong progress. We also encourage pupils to reflect on their learning, set personal goals and develop the independence, resilience and self-belief needed to succeed both in school and beyond.

Beyond the classroom, Year 5 and 6 pupils benefit from a wide range of extracurricular opportunities, community experiences and residential visits that enrich their learning and personal development. Through participation in clubs, sports, performances, leadership opportunities and community projects such as The Young Leaders Award, children develop confidence, teamwork and a sense of responsibility. Our residential visit to PGL, provides valuable opportunities for pupils to challenge themselves, build resilience, develop independence and strengthen relationships with their peers. These experiences help children develop essential life skills, including communication, problem-solving and collaboration, while fostering the confidence and independence needed for future success.
